I stumbled across these pictures on Dark Roasted Blend (more incredible photos on the site). The landscape and flora completely blow me away.
Socotra Island, which I had never heard of before, is located in the Indian Ocean off the Horn of Africa. It is a tropical desert climate (sounds kind of like an oxymoron, no?) and it is geographically isolated. This combination of harsh climate and isolation has endowed Socotra with incredible biodiversity – the island is inhabited by more than 700 rare species of flora and fauna, a third of which are found nowhere else on earth. Socotra has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.
I would absolutely love to explore this wondrous place. It will have to go on my every-growing ‘someday’ wish list.
